Laura & Louise Triumph

In a year where the men’s honours were widely spread, the ladies events were dominated by Louise Barnett and Laura Deigman and each ended the day with 3 titles. In the main Ladies event, the open singles last years winner, Louise won a long and highly competitive match with her young challenger, finally defeating 14 year old Laura 7-6, 3-6, 6-3 in a match were opportunities and dominance ebbed and flowed between the pair.

In the Ladies doubles Louise teamed up with Adriana Wong, one of last year’s opposition to retain her title against Jo Head and Louisa Wood who after a close struggle in the first set were overwhelmed in the second 7-5, 6-0. Louise’s third title came with the retention of the mixed doubles crown with her usual partner Stuart Foster with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Mark Mandeville and Adriana Wong.

Laura, not to be put off by the first event went on to win the U18 Girls singles defeating Vanessa Maloney in a repeat of last year’s final 6-4, 6-1, the U16 Girls singles winning 6-2, 6-0 against Claire Birmingham and finally teaming up with Claire to take the U18 Girls Doubles title with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Vanessa Maloney and Alice Revens

In the main Men’s event last year’s champion Jonathan Maloney found this year’s opposition rather stronger and Simon Hooker, new to the club this season took the title in straight sets, 6-4 in the first holding on to an early break and then, having raced to a 5-0 lead and match points, closed it out at 6-2. However Jonathan then went on to take his 5th consecutive U18 boys’ title defeating Jo Revens 6-3, 6-1 and if wins again next year it will be a record that is likely to stand for some time.

In the Men’s doubles Peter Lavery and Steve Woolland last year’s runners-up produced an outstanding performance and forced a number of uncharacteristic errors from the 2006 champions Stuart Foster and Geoff Reynolds winning in straight sets 6-4, 6-2.

In the other senior Men’s events Geoff Green a recent entrant to the 45+ ranks beat long time veteran Len Worley 6-3, 6-3, David Sacker won his first title at the club with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Mike Atkinson in the 60+ event, and Peter Henry and Alec Spooner retained the 45+ Men’s doubles title with a 6-1, 6-4 defeat of Tony Simmonds and Len Worley. On the Ladies side, the 40+ doubles was won 6-3, 6-2 by Jane Morris and Jane McFall with victory over last champions Hilary Linton and Ann Bixley.

In boys junior events Jo Revens won the U16 title 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 in a tough encounter with Christian Slater after which Christian retained his U14 title with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Michael Turner. Continuing this theme Michael Turner played William Rawlinson in an emotionally charged match for the U12 crown taking the title in a third set tiebreaker 6-4, 2-6 7-6 (7-5). In the U10 two new names appear with Matthew Sperling defeating Fergus Browne 6-1, 6-1 and in the U12 doubles, William Rawlinson and Michael Turner took the title with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Andrew Moore and Rhodri Jones.

The three other girls singles events were U14 won by Claire Birmingham defeating Isobel Maloney 6-3, 6-1, U10 where two other new names Rionna Woodbury and Charlotte Eatonhart played with Rionna taking the title with a 6-2, 6-3 victory.

In the remaining junior doubles Jo and Alice Revens beat Will Chaplin and Laura Birmingham 6-0, 6-2 to take the U18 event and Matthew and Ellie Clark were 6-1, 5-7, 6/7 (12/10) tiebreaker winners over Greg and Rionna Woodbury for the U12 title.

With 28 matches to be played it was a blessing that finals day provided uninterrupted play and an afternoon and early evening of warm sunshine. Special thanks are due to Jane Freeman who provided lunches and teas, the tournament organisers Jeremy Evans (seniors) and Jeremy Sperling (juniors), and our Sponsor Geoff Williams of the Hughes Group who presented the prizes.
