Keith Dewick Sportsmanship Award 2020

…When superlatives are not enough!

In a world full of hype, it is important that we recognise people who really have done something special, and Ann Witter, the winner of the Chesham Bois Tennis Club Keith Dewick Sportsmanship Award for 2020, is just such a person.

This sports award is unusual as it is not based on results but rather on the attributes of character, integrity and sportsmanship; specifically, respectful, unselfish and committed, willing to help, having a positive attitude, wins with character, loses with dignity, and being a role model to other members.

Ann has delivered against every one of these attributes and, what makes her even more special, is that she has only been a member for less than 4 years, joining soon after she moved from near Warrington to the area in August 2016 bringing her considerable playing talents with her!

Since then, she’s been ever present on the courts, both as an excellent team captain and player, happy to partner anyone and equally magnanimous in victory or defeat. Not content with this, in early 2018 she took on the role of membership secretary and simultaneously joined the committee. In addition, she trained in the mysteries of managing and modifying the complex booking system to make it fit for the club’s purpose, an absolutely necessity to enable play during the pandemic. Talking of which she even joined the rota that enabled the bar to function!

A windswept Ann, seen here with Ann Dewick and the trophy, says she loves the ethos and friendliness of the club and was more than happy to put her hand up for anything that would be useful. We at the club are all truly grateful to Ann and it is why, even with more than 10 people nominated this year, Ann was the clear winner.
