On a day when the weather gods smiled down upon us, with glorious sunshine and a gentle breeze, our combatants had to rely on their golfing skills and not the vagaries of the British climate to win through. In truth, it would be difficult to think of a better way of spending such a Friday afternoon.
The team captains were two Steves, Steve Ellis-Jones for Tennis and Steve Hunt for Squash and the match comprised 5 four-balls and one singles with tee-off at 1.00pm. First up was the singles, then the four-balls set off and the afternoon proceeded with much good humour, matching the conditions, accompanying the inevitable keen inter-sport rivalry.
In the end the result of the match came down to the result of the final hole of the final fourball. Tennis were one up coming into the eighteenth but since Squash had won the previous encounter in 2018 winning this hole would give them a draw and retention of the trophy. However, their final putt could only have drawn the hole and Tennis would have won 3.5-2.5. As it was Tennis won the hole and the contest 4-2. This meant that after 6 encounters the score is nicely balanced at 3 apiece!
The competitions for nearest to the pin, hole 4, and longest drive, hole14, were sitting in the hands of Tennis until the penultimate four-ball when Kris McKenzie from Squash scooped both prizes, bottles of bubbly!
As each of the teams came off the course they were treated to ham, egg and chips and the odd drink or two. The day was rounded off with a brief presentation from Steve Ellis-Jones, for whom, many thanks for organising the event, and with the promise at another event at a different location in 2024.
