Junior Night

As a Junior Member you get access to free Junior Night, this takes place every Friday evening during term time, giving all age groups the chance to enjoy free on-court sessions led by a coach. These aren’t formal coaching sessions, but fun, engaging activities like drills, point play, and games — all designed to keep kids active and loving tennis.

Our kitchen is usually run by volunteers and serves hot food and treats on Fridays. If you can spare an hour or so on a Friday evening, we’d really appreciate your support — please get in touch!

While the kids are on court, the bar is open for adults, which is always a popular way to unwind.

Junior night session times:

  • 5:30–6:00 – Red Ball (8 & under)
  • 6:00–6:45 – Orange & Green Ball (9–11 years)
  • 6:45–7:30 – Yellow Ball (11+ years)

Junior Coaching Sessions

We’ve got a fantastic range of classes for all levels — from complete beginners to more advanced players — using the red, orange, green and yellow ball system. More information on dates and times can be viewed here.

Not quite ready to commit? No problem! You’re very welcome to book a trial session

Which class is right for your child?

RED BALL (Ages 4–8)

  • Bigger, softer ball
  • Smaller court
  • Focus: coordination, fun rallies & confidence

Red ball moves more slowly and bounces lower, giving young players more time to react and build solid fundamentals.

ORANGE BALL (Ages 8–10)

  • Medium compression ball
  • 3/4 court
  • Focus: adding spin, movement & control

Orange ball is a little faster, helping players learn to rally consistently and start playing competitive points.

GREEN BALL (Ages 9–12)

  • Low compression ball (faster than orange)
  • Full court
  • Focus: tactics, positioning & match play

Green ball prepares players for the standard yellow ball by increasing speed and court coverage.

YELLOW BALL (Ages 10+)

  • Full-size (normal) ball
  • Full court
  • Focus: Developing their game

Ball Machine

The junior section have a ball machine for the exclusive free use of junior members.  A great way to hit lots and lots of balls – this machine has settings to vary speed, spin and frequency and an “oscillator” to get you running from side to side (if you choose!).  It IS a serious piece of machinery,  so for everyone’s safety we will need to ensure that you can use it safely (or with parental supervision).  Please contact Louise Dobby (louise.dobby@hotmail.co.uk)  to find out more information and arrange a trial.

Club Kit

Club kit is available to buy for members.  T-shirts, Caps and Hoodies are all on offer and the Hoodies can be customised with your name if you choose.  Please see here for a look at what’s on offer (plus see them being worn all around the club!)

Please complete an order form if you would like to make a purchase – in the past one big order has been collated at the beginning of the season, but we are investigating the possibility of individuals ordering their own kit through the year – watch this space!

Competitions

Club Championship

Widely regarded by players as one of the most important events in the club calendar, the Junior Club Championships usually run from May to September. This year (2026), Finals Day will be held on Saturday, 19th September

There’s a wide range of singles events across all age groups — from Mini Red through to all yellow ball categories. If there are enough entries, consolation events will also be available.

The junior finals take place alongside the Senior Club Championships, creating a fantastic, shared Finals Day atmosphere.

Junior Box league

If you play with a yellow ball, you’re eligible to enter this fun internal competition. Each month, you’re placed in a group (or “box”) with two other players and play short-format matches — typically lasting around an hour. You’re responsible for arranging the date and time of your own matches. Winners move up to a higher box, and loser move down, so you’ll quickly find the level that suits you best. If you have any questions, please contact Stephen Whibley at whibmail@gmail.com.

Champions Race

This is a monthly event giving the younger members of the club a chance to play matches against each other in a friendly environment. The emphasis is on participation and practicing all those things the coaches have been telling you! It’s a great stepping stone into competition, with points awarded for each match played, each point won and a bonus for fair play. It is run by the coaching staff but parents should be prepared to help with scoring.

Youth League Team Tennis

This event takes place in the spring and summer and offers a great opportunity to team up with friends and represent Chesham Bois against other local clubs. Teams are entered across various age groups and ability levels, and our coaches will help determine the most suitable team for you.

Road to Wimbledon

For under-14s, this is a fantastic competition that begins with matches at club and county level, with the exciting possibility of progressing to the final rounds at Wimbledon. In 2019, one of our members successfully advanced to compete at the All England Club.

In 2022, another junior member placed second at the county level and was invited to a special Coaching Clinic day at Wimbledon, led by former British No.1 Tim Henman and AELTC’s Head Coach Dan Bloxham — an experience he thoroughly enjoyed.

The same player went on to win the county competition in both 2023 and 2024, and truly enjoyed the opportunity to play at Wimbledon.

Other Competitions

There may be other fun competitions for members, organised by the Junior Committee or our coaching team — such as the Team Challenge for yellow ball players, Waves competition, and more. Please see our monthly newsletter for details.
