What a day it was! This year’s Club Championships Finals Day was a spectacular, with our club’s players giving their all on the courts and treating us to a day of thrilling tennis. The sun shone and spectators were out in full force cheering on all the players and maybe enjoying a Pimms or two!
The day kicked off early with a number of matches taking place including the Ladies Singles Finals. Emily Koya, defended her title for a 2nd year in a row, this year against the rising star Charlotte Dobby. And in the Men’s over 60s Final Roy Coffer beat Jerzy Stera in a thrilling 3 set battle.
Late morning saw a very exciting Mixed Doubles match. Stuart Foster & Kelly Adams had a lengthy 3 set battle, but finally overcame their worthy opponents Adam Reid and Louise Dobby. Alongside the open mixed match was another 3 set battle in the Vets Mixed Match, which was eventually won by Julie Simpson & Andy Pearce over Paul Sweeney and Alita Davern.
Kelly was then back on court regaining the Ladies Doubles crown with her partner Sarah Skepper over Jenny Vaidya and Emily Koya. A great day for Kelly! Alongside all the doubles excitement was the Men’s Singles Final, featuring Oliver Osborn against Phil Johnson. Both players showcased their great tennis skills, with Oliver taking the title.
As the afternoon rolled in, the bar opened, the BBQ was lit and the Pimms and Strawberries were served. The spotlight shifted to the Men’s doubles final. Back on court was Stuart Foster with partner Matt Reid and they played a thrilling match against Christian Grant and Adam Reid who took the title in a very close match.
And finally, the Men’s Vets Doubles was won by Jonathan Grant & Paul Sweeney (below bottom left) over Geoff Williams & Chris Babington. The last match on court which finished just before 7pm was the Ladies Vets Doubles, the eventual winners after a 2hrs, 3 set battle was Jenny Vaidya & Emily Weller over Susie Stranders & Katie Houghton.
It wasn’t just the adults who provided the spectators with great tennis, the juniors showcased why we should all be excited about the potential at the club.

In addition to the on-court action, the atmosphere was fantastic, with a delicious BBQ thanks to Rob and Sarah Skepper, and much appreciated complimentary Pimms & Strawberries, thanks to the entertainment committee.
To complete the day tournament organiser Louise, and Club Chair Geoff presented the adult prizes and Yanjie & Stephen presented the awards to the juniors. A special award, the Keith Dewick Cup was presented to Callum Hughes (accepted by his Mum Mal) which was given for his character, integrity and sportsmanship.
A big thank you to Louise Dobby who worked extremely hard to put on a fantastic day, and to all the volunteers who helped make the day run smoothly.
